Choosing the Right Rug Size
You know you want a rug in a key location, now it is time to determine the size of rug you need. Choosing the right rug size depends on the dimensions of the space you want to cover. Buying a rug that is either too large for the space provided or to small is a mistake that you can easily avoid by taking the time to correctly measure the floor area that you want your rug to cover. But before you begin to measure for your new rug, that are a couple of things to consider…
Common Rug Sizes:
Standard sizes of area rugs include 2'x3', 4'x6', 5'x8', 6'x9', 8'x10' and larger. Knowing the standard sizes before measuring the floor space you wish to cover can give you a head start when you begin shopping for a new rug.
Decide on a Rug Shape:
Determining whether you want an oval rug, round rug, square rug, or rectangle rug can help you in the measuring process as you will see below. Take a few minutes to decide on a shape of rug for the floor space you want to cover.
Measuring for Rugs:
Now that you have a shape in mind, it's time to start measuring your floor area.
Measuring for Round Rugs:
Round rugs are sold by the size of their diameter so what you need to determine is the diameter of the rug you need. For a round rug measurement, imagine your rug on the area you wish to cover then lay down a strip of masking tape from the center of the of your imaginary rug to its imaginary outside edge. Measure the length of your tape to determine the radius of the circle. Now double the radius to get the diameter. Round rugs are sold by the size of their diameters. Adjust your measurements up or down a few inches to make your rug measurements match the closest standard size.
Measuring for Square Rugs & Rectangle Rugs:
For this measurement process, have some sheets of paper handy. Place one sheet of paper where you want each of the rug corners to lay. Measure the corners and adjust them as needed to make your imaginary rug smaller or larger given the standard rug sizes.
Measuring for Oblong & Oval Rugs:
Similar to measuring for a round rug, you will need to run one piece of tape on your floor to determine the length of your area rug and run another piece of tape for the width or widest part of your area rug. Now you should have a cross taped to your floor and can measure your oblong or oval rug as if it were a rectangle. Again make any needed adjustments to your measurements to account for standard rug sizes.
Measuring a Whole Room Rug:
This is perhaps the easiest measurement to determine if you already know the size of room the rug is to cover. If you would like to border your rug with exposed flooring, consider leaving a 12-inch to 15-inch border of flooring space to frame your area rug. Measure the difference and you're done.
Now that you have the rug dimensions you need, you are ready to shop for new rugs! This is a good time to equip yourself with a tape measure since it is common for advertised rugs sizes to be inaccurate. Rugs are like jeans...a size 14 of one brand of jeans may fit you like a size 16, and another brand of size 14 jeans may be too tight. So your tape measure will help you "try on" your rug to ensure it will fit your floor space measurements and will help you avoid any unwanted rug size surprises.
